Basic Safety and Privacy: Do Not Paste Sensitive Information

ChatGPT can be incredibly helpful, but here is the first rule that matters more than clever prompting: do not paste anything you would not want copied, saved, or seen by the wrong person. If that sounds a little dramatic, good. Better dramatic than cleaning up a privacy mess later.

Why this matters

New users often treat ChatGPT like a private notebook, a trusted coworker, or that one friend who “would never tell anyone.” That is risky.

If you paste sensitive information into an AI chat, you may be sharing more than you intended. That can include personal details, business information, financial records, medical data, passwords, or private client content. Once you hit enter, you cannot un-ring that bell. It is a bit like posting your diary on the internet and hoping everyone suddenly develops perfect manners.

The idea in plain English

Use ChatGPT as if you are working in a space that should stay privacy-aware, not privacy-careless.

That means:

  • Do not paste passwords, API keys, or login details
  • Do not paste Social Security numbers, bank details, tax records, or credit card numbers
  • Do not paste private medical information unless you fully understand the risks
  • Do not paste confidential work documents, legal agreements, or client data
  • Do not paste anything covered by privacy rules or company policy

If you need help with sensitive material, redact it first. Replace real details with safe placeholders.

For example:

Instead of this Do this
“Here is my full contract with client names and pricing” “Here is a sample contract with names and prices removed”
“Rewrite this email with my phone number and address included” “Rewrite this email, contact details removed”
“Analyze my lab report with my full identity on it” “Analyze these test results, personal details removed”

Simple example

Unsafe prompt:

Review this employee file for performance concerns: [full name, address, salary, health notes]

Safer prompt:

Review this employee summary for performance concerns. I removed names, contact details, salary, and medical information. Help me spot management issues and rewrite the feedback professionally.

Same task, far less risk.

Quick tips

  • Remove names, account numbers, and identifying details
  • Use placeholders like [Client Name], [Account Number], or [Date]
  • Summarize instead of pasting raw documents
  • Check your company or industry rules before sharing work material
  • When in doubt, leave it out

Quick summary

ChatGPT is useful, but it is not the place for secrets. Treat anything you paste with caution. If information is private, regulated, confidential, or personally identifying, do not paste it as-is. Redact first, generalize when possible, and keep sensitive data out of the chat. That habit alone will save you a lot of trouble later.
