Task
Task
If prompt engineering had a steering wheel, Task would be the part that points the car somewhere useful. It is the specific thing you want ChatGPT to do. Not the background, not the tone, not the format. The actual job.
A lot of weak prompts fail for one simple reason: they describe a topic, but they never clearly say what should happen with that topic. That is like handing someone a folder, nodding seriously, and walking away.
What this term means
In prompt engineering, a Task is the clear instruction that tells ChatGPT what action to take.
Examples of tasks include:
- summarize this article
- write a reply to this email
- compare these two options
- brainstorm marketing ideas
- explain this concept in simple language
- rewrite this paragraph to sound more professional
The task is the core action. It answers the question: What do you want the AI to do?
If your prompt says only, “Customer churn data for Q1,” that is not really a task. It is just a topic.
If your prompt says, “Analyze this Q1 customer churn data and identify the top 3 likely causes,” now you have a task.
That difference matters a lot.
In the FAST framework, T = Task:
- Format: How the output should look
- Audience: Who it is for
- Style: The tone or voice
- Task: What the AI should do
Task is often the anchor for everything else. If the task is vague, the rest of the prompt can be beautifully organized and still produce a fuzzy answer.
Why it improves a prompt
A clear task improves a prompt because it reduces ambiguity. ChatGPT does better when it knows the exact action you want.
Here is what a strong task helps with:
-
Focus
It keeps the response aimed at a specific outcome instead of wandering around like a meeting that should have been an email. -
Relevance
The AI is more likely to give you the kind of answer you actually need, not a generic information dump. -
Efficiency
You spend less time correcting, rewording, and asking follow-up questions. -
Control
A well-defined task gives you more predictable results. You are not leaving the AI to guess your intent. -
Better collaboration
When you know the task, you can layer in other prompt elements more effectively, such as format, audience, and tone.
A useful rule of thumb: if your prompt starts to feel fuzzy, check whether the task is truly stated as an action. Verbs help. Words like write, compare, list, explain, analyze, rewrite, and summarize usually signal that you are giving a real task.

These are not always perfect substitutes in every framework, but they point to the same basic idea: the thing you want the AI to do.
3 sample prompts
Sample prompt 1
Summarize the following meeting notes into 5 bullet points for a project manager: [paste notes]
How it uses the term:
The task is summarize. That gives ChatGPT a specific action to perform on the meeting notes.
Why it improves the prompt:
Without the task, the AI might explain the notes, rewrite them, or pull out random details. By stating “summarize,” you narrow the response to a clear outcome. Adding “into 5 bullet points” makes it even tighter.
Sample prompt 2
Compare these two software tools for a small accounting team, focusing on cost, ease of use, and reporting features: Tool A, Tool B.
How it uses the term:
The task is compare. The prompt tells ChatGPT exactly what kind of thinking to apply.
Why it improves the prompt:
If you only listed the two tools, the AI would have to guess what you wanted. Compare them? Describe them? Recommend one? The task removes that guesswork and produces a more useful answer.
Sample prompt 3
Rewrite this customer email so it sounds polite, confident, and concise: “We need those numbers ASAP because this delay is causing problems.”
How it uses the term:
The task is rewrite. It tells ChatGPT to transform existing text rather than explain or analyze it.
Why it improves the prompt:
That one verb changes everything. Instead of discussing tone in general, ChatGPT knows to produce a revised version of the email. The result is faster, more practical, and much closer to something you can actually use.
Quick summary
A Task is the action in your prompt, the part that tells ChatGPT what job to do. If you get this right, the rest of the prompt has something solid to stand on. If you skip it, you are basically handing the AI a sticky note that says, “You know, the thing.”
