Quiz
QUIZ
QUIZ is a simple prompt pattern for turning AI into a practice partner, not just a talking encyclopedia. Instead of asking for a wall of explanation and hoping something sticks, you ask the model to test you, check your thinking, spot what you missed, and then go deeper. It is less passive reading, more mental push-ups.
If normal prompting is like reading the manual, QUIZ is like having a coach who says, “Cool, now prove you actually understand it.”
What the template means
| Letter or word | Prompt ingredient | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Q, Question | Practice | Gives you a problem, quiz item, or recall task to answer |
| U, Understand answer | Evaluation | Tells the AI to interpret your response, not just mark it right or wrong |
| I, Identify gaps | Evaluation | Finds missing knowledge, weak reasoning, or partial understanding |
| Z, Zoom deeper | Detail | Follows up with a deeper explanation, harder question, or focused review |
Why this template works
QUIZ works because learning is interactive. Reading an answer can feel productive, but answering a question reveals what you actually know. That is where the useful embarrassment begins.
This template helps you build prompts that do four important things:
-
Create active recall
The AI asks you something, so your brain has to retrieve information instead of just recognizing it. -
Evaluate meaning, not just keywords
“Understand answer” matters because good learning is not only about matching phrases. Sometimes your answer is half-right, vague, or correct for the wrong reason. -
Spot blind spots
“Identify gaps” makes the AI explain what is missing. That is much more useful than a bland “Incorrect.” -
Go one level deeper
“Zoom deeper” turns a quiz into a mini tutoring loop. You do not stop at the mistake. You use the mistake.
In prompt engineering terms, QUIZ is great for learning, teaching, revision, interview prep, language practice, and skill drills. It is especially useful when you want the AI to coach you through understanding, not just dump information like a printer with emotional issues.
3 sample prompts
Sample prompt 1: Formal version
QUESTION: Ask me one multiple-choice question about basic cybersecurity for office workers.
UNDERSTAND ANSWER: After I reply, explain what my answer shows about my understanding in plain language.
IDENTIFY GAPS: Point out any missing knowledge, confusion, or unsafe assumptions in my answer.
ZOOM DEEPER: Then ask one follow-up question that goes slightly deeper than the first. Keep the difficulty suitable for a beginner.
How the template shows up:
- Q, Question: “Ask me one multiple-choice question about basic cybersecurity for office workers.”
- U, Understand answer: “After I reply, explain what my answer shows about my understanding in plain language.”
- I, Identify gaps: “Point out any missing knowledge, confusion, or unsafe assumptions in my answer.”
- Z, Zoom deeper: “Then ask one follow-up question that goes slightly deeper than the first.”
Why it improves the prompt: This version is crystal clear. It tells the AI to do more than ask a question and reveal the answer. It must evaluate your reasoning, find weak spots, and continue the learning process with a deeper follow-up. That makes the exchange more like coaching and less like a trivia app from 2006.
Sample prompt 2: Semi-structured version
Help me practice for a job interview about project management.
- Start with one interview question.
- After I answer, tell me what you think I understood well.
- Show me what is weak, vague, or missing in my response.
- Then push me a little further with a more detailed follow-up question.
Keep your feedback concise and practical.
How the template shows up:
- Q, Question: “Start with one interview question.”
- U, Understand answer: “Tell me what you think I understood well.”
- I, Identify gaps: “Show me what is weak, vague, or missing in my response.”
- Z, Zoom deeper: “Push me a little further with a more detailed follow-up question.”
Why it improves the prompt: This prompt feels more natural, but it still contains the full QUIZ structure. It works well because it gives the AI a sequence: ask, interpret, diagnose, deepen. That sequence keeps feedback useful and actionable. Without it, the AI might just praise your answer, rewrite it, or wander off into generic advice territory.
Sample prompt 3: Natural version
Pretend you are helping me study photosynthesis. Ask me one question at a time, tell me what my answer shows I understand, point out what I missed, and then go a little deeper with the next question until I really get it.
How the template shows up:
- Q, Question: “Ask me one question at a time.”
- U, Understand answer: “Tell me what my answer shows I understand.”
- I, Identify gaps: “Point out what I missed.”
- Z, Zoom deeper: “Go a little deeper with the next question until I really get it.”
Why it improves the prompt: This version sounds like something a real person would actually type, which is nice because real people are the ones using ChatGPT. Even in casual form, QUIZ gives the AI a teaching loop. The result is more focused, adaptive learning instead of one big explanation that you forget 14 seconds later.
Warnings and extra tips
QUIZ is useful, but it is not magic. A few things to watch for:
-
Do not make the topic too vague.
“Quiz me on science” is broad enough to include black holes, frogs, and your high school trauma. Be specific. -
Set the difficulty level.
If you do not say beginner, intermediate, or advanced, the AI may guess wrong. Sometimes badly. -
Ask for one question at a time when learning.
If the AI gives you ten questions at once, this stops being practice and starts feeling like punishment. -
Evaluation can still be imperfect.
The AI may overpraise, oversimplify, or occasionally misunderstand your answer. If the topic is high stakes, double-check important feedback. -
QUIZ is best for learning loops, not final truth.
It helps you practice and refine understanding. It does not replace a textbook, teacher, official training, or verified source material. -
Use “zoom deeper” carefully.
Going deeper is useful, but if the first answer is badly wrong, you may want the AI to correct basics before increasing difficulty.
A smart upgrade is to add one more instruction such as:
- “Keep explanations at a beginner level.”
- “Use real-world examples.”
- “Do not reveal the answer until I respond.”
- “Score my answer from 1 to 5.”
Those small additions make QUIZ even more practical.
Quick summary
QUIZ stands for Question, Understand answer, Identify gaps, Zoom deeper. It turns a prompt into a mini learning cycle: test, evaluate, diagnose, and deepen. That makes your prompts better for studying, coaching, interview prep, and skill practice.
Try it next with something you are actively learning, like Excel formulas, a new language, cybersecurity basics, or public speaking. Start small: ask the AI to give you one question, analyze your answer, show the gap, and push one step deeper. That is where prompting starts to feel less like typing at a machine and more like training with a very patient tutor.
