The Three-Tab Desktop App: Chat, Cowork, and Code

Section 9 — Meet Cowork — The Agentic Desktop

The Three-Tab Desktop App: Chat, Cowork, and Code

The Claude desktop app organizes three distinct surfaces into one interface. Understanding what each tab does, and what mode you’re in at any given moment, prevents the confusion that comes from expecting Chat behavior in a Cowork context or vice versa.

Why this matters

Each tab operates differently. The same prompt can produce different results depending on which tab you’re in, because the context, capabilities, and permissions available to Claude vary by surface. Knowing which tab to be in for which type of work is a practical navigation skill.

The three surfaces

Chat: The conversational AI assistant. Everything covered in Act 1 of this course lives here. Text generation, Projects, Artifacts, connectors for interactive queries, Skills and Plugins. Chat doesn’t have access to your file system by default and doesn’t run on a schedule.

Cowork: The agentic desktop environment. File system access, scheduled tasks, Dispatch, computer use. This is where you build and run automated workflows. The conversation interface looks similar to Chat, but the underlying capability set is different.

Code: A Claude Code terminal interface for software developers. Command-line-style interaction for code generation, debugging, and repository work. If you’re not a software developer, this tab is mostly out of scope for your work. The course covers it briefly in Section 14 as a pointer for learners who want to go further.

Moving between tabs

Each tab maintains its own state: your active conversations in Chat, your configured workflows in Cowork, your code sessions in Code. Switching between tabs doesn’t break anything; you return to the same state when you come back.

One practical consequence: if you start a conversation in Chat and realize you needed the file access of Cowork (or vice versa), you typically start over in the right tab rather than migrating the conversation. Take note of which tab you’re in before a long working session.

The sidebar is shared

The left sidebar (conversation history, Projects, Skills) is largely shared across tabs, though some elements are tab-specific. Your Claude Projects and conversation history are accessible from both Chat and Cowork. Folder configurations and scheduled tasks are specific to Cowork.

Try this in Claude

Open the desktop app and click through all three tabs. In each tab, note: what’s different in the main interface? What options or sections appear that don’t appear in the other tabs? This orientation exercise takes five minutes and removes navigation uncertainty for the rest of the Cowork sections.

Quick summary

Chat is the conversational assistant surface. Cowork is the agentic desktop surface with file access and automation. Code is the developer terminal interface. Be in the right tab for your task: Chat for interactive text work, Cowork for file-connected and automated workflows. The sidebar is largely shared; workflow configurations are tab-specific.
